The Robert T. Wright Gallery is pleased to present the exhibition Bill Frederick: Here Comes Trouble. Chicago-based artist Bill Frederick, paints watercolors and brush and ink works on paper that have an unsettling effect upon the viewer.

"As
for the significance of the title Here
Comes Trouble, rather than having a specific literal narrative
meaning, to me it refers to the undercurrent of unease implicit in the
pictures. I typically make a point of giving the viewer a
(fictional) place to be within what's shown, or at least an implied
relationship to the fiction within the picture: the viewer can imagine
being in a specific place-- filling a car in a gas station, snapping a picture
in a kitchen, standing in a yard looking at chickens through chicken wire, and
so on. In a few cases people in the pictures return our own stare. I
also make a particular point of showing phenomena of subjective
vision-- changes of focus, the effects of light too bright or too dim, and the
fleeting tendency we have to see double, a result of sight with two eyes
--which to my mind underlines our own presence. This, together with my typical
subject matter-- long views along streets, empty or austere places, heavy
skies, etc., I think creates a somewhat ominous quality for the
viewer. To put something more specific into words I think will have the effect
of lessening its meaning: I hope the interested viewer will be prompted by
the title to see the pictures in a particular light and from there bring
her/his own thoughts to them."
