Statement:

I have been “in love” with making a range of drinking vessels during my entire career in clay.  Small cups, personal to each of us, larger vessels for larger quantities…the fabric of our daily eating and drinking form pleasant tactile warmth for our senses.  These five are a glimpse of my approach to such pots.

Bio:

Wayne State University B.F.A. (1960), Cranbrook Academy M.F.A. (1962), United States Army (1962 – 1964)

Started Plum Tree Pottery in 1964 continuing to present time. Since beginning in 1964 as a studio potter, I have greatly enjoyed the exploration of the rich world of functional pottery. And, it would seem that those who follow my work have become accustomed to the changing nature of my pottery over the years and have supported it with kindness and sympathetic generosity. For this I am grateful. Without this sense of harmony that flows between us, the survival of my studio pottery would be in question. But, as it is, my inclination to be inquisitive is happily matched by an equally willing public response. I believe it is the kind of relationship that has nurtured enduring art activity in other times in many cultures.

My work in the studio is enhanced and balanced by accepting a limited number of invitations to lead ceramics workshops in the U.S.A. and other countries. Additionally, I make an effort to share ideas with others through writing, lectures, and tours of my studio. I also offer year-long artist- in-residence training periodically as a way to help young potters learn about techniques, philosophies and goals in a full-time studio pottery.

Meet John Glick:

"I am an artist in my 47th year in my studio and I am having as much fun as I ever have had playing with ideas.  Did you ever know that having fun could be a given in the arts?  Well, I think it can be that way.  My career is a blend of activities that includes making many things some of which are pots.  Wait a minute, did he say some of which are pots?

I make lots of pots and I make sculpture and I make tools and studio equipment to help me make my work.  I am a big advocate of learning to make things that make my ideas flow from my fingers more readily.  I call this kind of integration of idea and making the 'flow'.  I like being in the flow as much as I can be."
