Statement:
One reason potters love cups so much is because they are an accessible way to get our creative intentions into the hands of people who will use them on a regular basis.  The three I have sent to this exhibition will, I hope, speak clearly of my intentions to anyone who spends time with them.

On the two hour-glass shaped cups I have played the drier, more complex textured areas against the liquid, translucent turquoise of the glaze, much as you might find a soft, matte feel to the under-side of a shiny leaf, or the worn surface of a piece of driftwood afloat on a serene body of water.

The stout mug with the etched design of a double maple seed is a combination of turquoise glazed panels alternating with the unglazed porcelain clay.  The seeds are represented under the watery blue as they might appear in a sketchbook under a wash of watercolor.  Living in the woods brings with it an abundance of these “helicopter” seeds, which I find fascinating both aesthetically and functionally, in the autumn.
